Hibernation

This has nothing to do with any IT thing. It's just me going in hibernation every day more. The sun raises every day a bit later and sets every day a bit earlier and I'm starting to fear that some day it just won't raise at all... :(

This is the darkest period in Finland (today we have around 6 hrs of sun theoretically, the clouds are doing the rest) and the only thing I would do is to sleep the whole day... unfortunately that's not possible...

1137 days of Finland (and still counting)

that means over 3 yrs... this is the moment when you realize that you either love it or hate it. It might take less but honestly Finland is a difficult country to decipher, first of all for the language that is really hard to speak, second because of the average way of being of Finns (it takes a lot to go deep in their feelings).

Well so far I'm still counting... that means something at least :D

Entering the digital (SLR) era

My friend mooch (if he is reading) will be happy to know that after 2 years of "I'll buy it..." I bought my first DSLR camera: a Canon EOS 450D. Long expected purchase, that finally allows me to make some "real" photo (not that crappy stuff I was making before).
Just unpacked and studied all the instructions, here's one of the first shots:

SubDownlader: stop searching for subtitles

Bored of searching for a subtitle over the internet? I came across this very interesting project: Subdownloader. It's a python + QT program that allows you to scan your movies and search automatically for the right subtitle in any language you want from opensubtitles.org.

It's fast, it's available for linux and windows, it's open source and it works really well, and most important it finds always the right subtitle.

Click on the link above and try it yourself ;)

I want to know them!

3 Finns won the Gold Medal in the culinary olimpics 2008 held in Germany this year. Yle report the news without saying anything about Berlusconi, but knowing Finns they did this just to prove that what Berlusconi said some time ago was not true. :D this heck of Finns!

The menu was:

Starter: salmon, lobster and a spinach puréé as a starter.
Main meal: Veal fillet, veal shoulder and sweetbread sausages.
Dessert: strawberry-chocolate mousse and orange-yogurt cake.

(okay but what about pasta? :D :D)

Now the question is where these 3 guys/girls have been hiding all this time... maybe I wasn't rich enough to enjoy their delicacies ... :(

I will try to know them, I have to!

Where maemo is coming from...

Nokia 770Image by teoruiz via FlickrI will try to tell the story as my friend mooch told me quite some time ago.

It was the beginning of the internet tablets, it was so beginning that the tablets were just called "devices" and that the 770 was only a prototype. I wasn't there yet but mooch told me he was and he just received his brand new shiny desktop to start doing something.

In the search for a new name for his machine he fired up the good old 'pwgen' utility. Strange and incomprehensible names started to come up on the screen. One of those wasn't really maemo but it was really close to be (pwgen default is to give you 8 chars strings). He extrapolated somehow maemo from the 8 chars displaying on the screen and he dig up in the internet finding out that maemo didn't really mean that much besides something in a dialect on the other part of the world and he decided to choose that as the name of his desktop.

At that time he was the IT guy in the organization and he started to use his desktop to collect packages that developers were sending him over e-mail, ftp... (yeah it was really the beginning).

In few months his desktop was clogged with packages and he couldn't use it anymore as his desktop but it became quite useful as central repository for the developers.

He had to grow it with more disk space and move to another 2x CPU box. When services and needs grew way too much for the little power provided by 2GB and 2x PIII 700MHz, he ordered a new machine that became THE Server.

Someday after some other months somebody came into the room and asked him if Nokia could use that name to register a domain to publish some sdk. Without second thoughts he told "Of course".

Well that was the beginning of maemo.org .

Kudos to mooch ;)

Recovering from Maemo Summit 08

So finally I get few minutes to write about Maemo Summit 08. Hopefully (if the crawler hits my blog) this should be my first post aggregated with planet.maemo.org. So hello maemons.

At the beginning I wasn't so sure that I would have benefited by going to the summit and I was a bit sceptical about it. Well after that (and after one week passed to recover from it) I have to say: it was great!
First time I met a lot of people and had a chance to really talk to them (email, though useful, doesn't give you everything of a person). First time I had a chance to speak for more than the time allocated for the meeting with some nokians.
Overall there was this sensation of community that as an insider you don't feel everyday. Actually you never feel so much you're busy with your job.

I really have to thank (again) Quim and Peter that organized the summit. And I also have to thank the whole community. If you didn't get it we, as nokians, need you as much as you need us. Coming back to Finland after the summit I was refreshed and energized (even though I was damn tired) and I felt I was sharing this state of mind with a lot of others in the plane (at least the tiredness :D ).

Greetings to Niels, murrayc, kersten and the other of the openismus crew (great party!). To the Collabora guys and to the rest that I didn't mention here. See you at the next summit.

BIG thanks to the community to support us and to give us more energy to continue on this path.

Funny news from Finland

I continue the tradition started by simoniito collecting the funny news that finnish media spit out from time to time...

Yle makes public a study that (finally) reveals the unimaginable:
Pedestrians at Risk when Crossing the Street
According to the study, pedestrians and cyclists in densely populated areas are at risk of being struck by a car particularly when crossing the street.

Now that we know we will cross the streets paying more attention... :/

Finland and pizza Berlusconi

Finland is still shocked by the words Berlusconi pronounced some year ago and knowing finnish they won't forget easily. Berlusconi didn't make compliments to Finnish cousine while the european food authority was at stake:
"I have been to Finland and I have had to endure Finnish food, so I am certainly competent to make comparison. Today Barroso can taste our culatello (local ham) instead of Finnish smoked herring."

As a surprise the other day walking down the street I was stunned by this ad:

It translates more or less as: "Kotipizza's Berlusconi elected best pizza in the world." [Kotipizza is the shop]
Now I don't know how this pizza tastes (and honestly I will never try it) but I'm not really sure this would really be the best pizza in the world... maybe is a classic finnish joke to make fun of their (and also mine) beloved Silvio :)

MiMMS: My first OSS project :D

I started to work on MiMMS, an MMS stream downloader written in python.

When I first looked at the application it looked pretty much what I needed to download Italian TV shows to my N810 and watch them while I was on the bus (trying to take advantage of dead periods). The little problem was that (as for many other mms servers) the bandwidth was limited and it was taking me an hour to download just one show.
So I registered a new branch of MiMMS that allows you to split the stream in many parts and use all your bandwidth to be quicker. It still has a lot of work to do, but it works pretty well and I hope it'll soon be packaged for Debian.

Enjoy ;)

In English:
My personal belief and the one of the government is that in an evolved society there's no space for discriminations; thus also homofoby needs to be contrasted with the power of the civic-mindedness and the respect. To this behavior needs to correspond the chasteness of the manifestations of the homosexual community that should never degrade into exhibitionism and folklore. L'Italia, Travaglio, Schifani e i fatti

Update: Public taxes declaration in Italy

Yesterday after they were available for a couple of hours, the Tax office received the order to stop distributing the tax records of italians on internet...

It seems though that now the tax records of the italians are available on peer-to-peer network... Let's see how they are going to stop it :D

Public taxes declaration: in Italy!!!

I have to blog this before simoniito :D

He's always complaining because in Finland the tax declaration of everyone is publicly available and sent I don't know how many mails to the ombudsman about it.

And instead of Finland going towards "more privacy" "like in Italy", Italy goes open and, BAM! public tax records for italians! (At least one of the major italian newspapers claims so... even if it doesn't show up in the Tax office webpage)

"Riusciranno i nostri eroi..."?

Apache2.2, LDAP authentication / authorization and require ldap-group

DebianIn Apache2.2 (default in Debian Etch) all the LDAP authentication/authorization was rewritten. (Thank you guys for a great piece of FREE software.)

The module that performs both authentication (Authn) and authorization (Authz) for Apache sometimes is not very intuitive as Brad Nicholes says in this comment.

The problem is this: I have a nice way to provide an authentication Alias through mod_authn_alias to keep my Apache config clean and understandable BUT I cannot use that Alias to perform Authorization in many cases...

For example if I want to use
Require ldap-group
directive I have two ways of doing it.

either you DON'T use AuthnProviderAlias (BTW I just understood that Authn stands for authentication while Authz stands for Authorization... VERY intuitive) like this:

<Directory /mydir>
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /dev/null
AuthName "Access"
AuthBasicProvider ldap
AuthLDAPUrl ldap://myldap.server.com/o=myorg?uid?sub
AuthLDAPBindDN cn=account,ou=accounts,o=myorg
AuthLDAPBindPassword ****
require ldap-group cn=AGroup, ou=Groups, o=myorg
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
Order deny,allow
Allow from all
</Directory>

Or you DO specify both the Authn alias AND the AuthLDAPUrl in the Directory, so like this:

<AuthnProviderAlias ldap ldap-alias>
AuthLDAPUrl ldap://myldap.server.com/o=myorg?uid?sub
AuthLDAPBindDN cn=account,ou=accounts,o=myorg
AuthLDAPBindPassword ****
</AuthnProviderAlias>
<Directory /mydir>
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /dev/null
AuthName "Access"
AuthBasicProvider ldap-alias
AuthLDAPUrl ldap://myldap.server.com/o=myorg?uid?sub
AuthLDAPBindDN cn=account,ou=accounts,o=myorg
AuthLDAPBindPassword ****
require ldap-group cn=AGroup, ou=Groups, o=myorg
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
Order deny,allow
Allow from all
</Directory>

In a few words it doesn't make sense to use AuthnProviderAlias in this case... Just use the first approach, even though it looks very bad... it looks better than the other :D

Italiani all'estero - terza e ultima puntata

The Left – The Rainbow

Senza vergogna...

Beh io non me ne vanterei...

Piclens: improve the way you see images on internet

Very nice extension for your web browser(*). Piclens redesigns your screen to view the images on a 3D rolling wall. You can select them, view as slideshow. The nicest thing is that it integrates with flickr, google images, smugmug, deviantart and others.

Very bad though that doesn't work under linux... :(

Repubblica.it diffama Beppe Grillo...

Date: Sun, 9 Mar 2008 18:02:59 +0200
From: "XXX"
To: repubblicawww@repubblica.it
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
Content-Disposition: inline

Salve ho letto questo articolo:

http://www.repubblica.it/2007/02/sezioni/scienza_e_tecnologia/blogmania/blo
g-observer/blog-observer.html

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/mar/09/blogs

------

9. Beppe Grillo

Among the most visited blogs in the world is that of Beppe Grillo, a popular Italian comedian and political commentator, long persona non grata on state TV, who is infuriated daily - especially by corruption and financial scandal in his country.

A typical blog by Grillo calls, satirically or otherwise, for the people of Naples and Campania to declare independence, requests that Germany declare war on Italy to help its people ('We will throw violets and mimosa to your Franz and Gunther as they march through') or reports on Grillo's ongoing campaign to introduce a Bill of Popular Initiative to remove from office all members of the Italian parliament
who've ever had a criminal conviction. Grillo's name for Mario Mastella, leader of the Popular-UDEUR centre-right party, is Psychodwarf. 'In another country, he would have been the dishwasher in a pizzeria,' says Grillo. Through his blog, he rallied many marchers in 280 Italian towns and cities for his 'Fuck You' Day last September.
Least likely to post 'Sign up to our campaign to grant Silvo Berlusconi immunity'
-----

fare i conti".

Berlusconi scrive agli italiani all'estero

Cara amica, caro amico, (?)

Printing digital photo in Finland

(digikuvat tulostaminen suomessa, in finnish?)

I had to print some photo and I was curios to know what was the cheapest service to use here in Finland.

I ended up comparing some of the services I found on internet. (The list is not supposed to have all the existing ones of course and is updated at today)

When a service allowed to go and pick up the photos somewhere I supposed to chose that option (0 euros as delivery cost), otherwise mail delivery is taken in consideration.

There is no consideration on the quality of the paper, type of printing and so on. This is only a price/quantity comparison.

The format I examined has been 10x13/15 cm with no special options.

And the winner is...

In the category from 0 to 50 photos: gigantti.fi with pick up from the shop
In the category from 60 to 80 photos: ifolor.fi with delivery at your address
In the category from 90 on: extrafilm.com with delivery at your address

The Man From Earth

Oh finally a movie that I would define GREAT!

Sci-Fi that really makes you think. Low budget movie that kicks the ass of many Hollywood movies made with lots of dollars and no brain.

If you want to see a movie that not only entertains you but also gives you a bit of feed for your thoughts, well, you found it!

Finland really needs workers... :D

I haven't seen this ad on tv and I have no idea if and in what countries they are airing it, but, if so, it means Finland really needs workers from abroad... :D

Complex LDAP queries with python

I came across this nasty problem today and the solution was so easy and stupid that it took me 10 minutes to understand what it was after many tries... :D

Say that you want to make a quite complex query to an LDAP directory using ldapsearch, the syntax is:
ldapsearch -x -h ldap.server.com -b o=Myorganization "&(uid=john*)(!(jobgrade=boss))(address=*Washington*)"

Now to do the same thing with python ldap module I expected the syntax would be the same... well no! (don't know why?).
import ldap
l = ldap.open('ldap.server.com')
res = l.search_s('o=Myorganization', ldap.SCOPE_SUBTREE, '(&(uid=john*)(!(jobgrade=boss))(address=*Washington*))')

so you have simply to add brackets before the & (or |)... again I wonder why it was implemented differently...

Christine - A possessed car

(photo from Amazon.com)

(possessed it's because I hope I'll get rid of it on Monday :D)

So I want to buy a new car, I went to the shop negotiated a bit the price for the new car and for my car if I give it in exchange, I got a good quote for both, I'm happy because I'm getting a new car, the dealer is happy because he sold a car and the happiness is bigger for both. And the world is a better place. (if it was that easy...)

BUT (there's always a but) we didn't take into account the feelings of our old car. Feeling that we were letting her (the car is a woman for me) down she thought to fight back and get her revenge. So yesterday I close the driver's door and the lock comes out with the key... mmm... 60 euros to fix it. Fair enough.
Today the shop calls me telling me that the new car is ready to be picked up on monday. Hurrah! I take the car today, lower the window and the window gets stuck and doesn't come anymore up... WTF! Go back to the mechanic... the whole lift mechanism is broken... other 300 euros to fix it... Only 3 days before selling it... She really has a soul... Bastard...

I havo no name! (problems with LDAP on Debian)

Short post.

If you bound your machine to an LDAP server using PAM and libnss on a Debian box and you run into this:

I have no name!@yourmachine:~$

Check the permission for both libnss-ldap.conf and pam_ldap.conf. They have to be world readable ;)

Enjoy :D
